Parks in Citrus County, FL

Citrus Memorial Health YMCA

The Citrus Memorial Health YMCA is a nice place for the kids. They have open green space to run free which doubles as a soccer field. The park also has a playground, basketball court, and a wonderful place to have a nice walk on their wooded trails. If you love pools or water playgrounds there are amenities for that, too.

 

Liberty Park

Liberty Park is located near Henderson Lake in Downtown Inverness. I can tell you the kiddos have so much fun at the park, especially the little kids. The park is free entry and it has a large parking lot.

The park has shaded pavilions wooded bridges to walk and explore. They have two bench swings and one baby swing. The playground sets vary for different ages. So you can entertain the little ones while you are watching your older kids play on slides and other playground sets. The park also boasts a depot district that features local vendors on the weekends.

Luckily there are picnic tables so if you want to plan an afternoon for the whole family this is a great park to visit. It is truly one of a kind.

 

Hunter Springs Park

Hunter Springs Park is an amazing park including an man-made beach. The kids will love the playground and your dogs will love the open space. This park does get crowded on the weekends so be sure to get there early. If you love making new friends, this park is for you!

 

Whispering Pines City Park

Whispering Pines City Park is located in Inverness, FL. There are no gates so you can access the park. It is one of the nicest, cleanest, and safest parks in Citrus County. This awesome spot even includes a water park for the kids!

Wildlife Park in Citrus County, FL

Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

If you love history, nature, and walking tours, this is a great place to go. They offer boat tours through Pepper Creek, guided tours through the wildlife exhibits, and even feature an underwater fish observatory. You also learn of the history of Homosassa Springs and meet Lu, the oldest captive hippopotamus in Florida.

There is $13 admission fee for adults and a $5 admission fee for children ages 6-12. Children 5 and under have free admission. Parking is free and the Pepper Creek boat tours are $3 per person. Tram service is included in park admission fees.

Withlacoochee State Forest Biking And Nature Trails

This trail is 43 miles long and it passes through Citrus, Pasco, and Hernando counties. It is an easy ride and hike. It is completely paved and it is safe from automobiles and traffic lights. It is a great way to see all the different trail styles that exist in different counties.
 

 

Crystal River Preserve State Park: Eco-Walk Trail

This is a great walking spot tucked away four miles north of Downtown Crystal River. This trail takes you through Crystal River Preserve State Park and it loops through the tranquil greenery for about two miles. It is a hidden gem of Crystal River, FL. The trail is also a drive away from the Downtown shopping plaza so don’t miss the chance to walk around this beautiful park.

How close is Citrus County to Tampa?

Citrus County is about an hour away from Tampa, FL. It is about a 80 miles away to be exact. Citrus County is also about an hour and twenty minutes from Orlando, FL. Both of these nearby cities include theme parks such as Walt Disney World, Seaworld, Legoland, and much, much more!

If you happen to head down to Tampa be sure to take the Suncoast Parkway. Some of the nearby cities, such as Spring Hill, are amazing. If you head South on the Suncoast Parkway, you will also reach Clearwater Beach, which is nationally recognized as one of the best beaches in the nation due to it’s upscale hotels, dining, and watersport activities.

Heading North from Citrus County you will land you in Gainesville, FL, home of the University of Florida. In Gainesville there is the Florida Museum of Natural History (great for kids and outdoor activities such as a butterfly garden), Ben Hill Griffin Stadium (If you are into high-energy college football), Hippodrome Theater (great for live plays), and Depot park (If you want to have a great park to picnic Depot park is a great place, and the parking is free. Rental areas are available, dogs are allowed, and live events occur in the park frequently). Gainesville is just another beautiful city nearby Citrus County.

Yes! It is one of the best places to live in Florida. The county has some of the bests parks, walking trails for nature lovers, shopping, and on major holidays the Crystal River community goes all out with their annual Christmas Parade. It is also not too far from great cities such as Orlando, Tampa, Gainesville, Clearwater, Ocala, Brooksville, Spring Hills, and St. Pete.
